BUFFER ZONES TO BORDERS

By Randy Loudenslager

Israel's Security Cabinet has decided to start the establishment of 'buffer zones.' These buffers zones are for the purpose of securing Israeli territory from areas occupied by the Palestinians. The buffers will be constructed of fences, electronic sensors and manned by troops. The idea is to stop the ability of Palestinians to cross into Jewish territory illegally as many suicide bombers have done and to isolate Israeli Arabs living in Israel from the influences of the Palestinian Intifada.

There has been no significant Palestinian opposition to the buffer zones. Most opposition is from the Jewish population. The majority of Jews in Israel are opposed to a Palestinian state carved from Israel according to the polls. For this reason opposition has risen to Sharon's buffer zone. Fueling this opposition are the far-right parties in Israel who feel once established the buffer zones will be a step to demarcating future borders for a Palestinian state.

Sharon needs to deal with security issues, marking one's territory denotes a willingness to defend it. Territory outside of what you are willing to defend is essentially up for grabs, hence the lack of resistance from the Palestinians as the West Bank is about to be fenced in.

Sharon is not a stupid man and understands what this buffer will become. If Sharon doesn't understand there are many in the Knesset who would be glad to educate him. What Sharon is doing is addressing security but he is also conceding, against his Likud party policy, that Israel will be forced to give up land for peace. Sharon, the great general of the Six Day War of 1967, is acting to establish borders according to Israel's security needs based on what he perceives to be Israel's future.

As the Israeli Defense Forces withdraw from Palestinian cities they will pull back only as far as the newly established buffer zones. Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer has revealed to the Knesset defense committee that the inevitable diplomatic course after military operations are over is the Saudi initiative. Sharon is shrewd and has shown himself to be an expert in the art of political maneuvering, but giving ground is giving ground and to acknowledge the Saudi plan as the next course of action is to see the inevitable rebellion against God's covenant as a foregone conclusion by Israel's leadership. Without an uncompromising stance against violation of the covenant all that is left is to see how much Israel can gain from negotiations. The Bible makes clear how much she stands to loose - everything.
