BURNING MOUNTAINS FROM THE SKY
By Randy Loudenslager
The world's scientific community is becoming increasingly alarmed as their voice is being drowned out by the war on terror and the conflict in the Middle East. Their alarm is over what they claim to be the growing chances of earth being struck by an asteroid. The alarm was raised to new levels when British scientists approached the offices of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The scientists wanted Blair to convey to U.S. President George Bush during his visit with Bush at his Crawford Texas ranch the need to take this threat more seriously. It has not been reported whether Blair conveyed the warnings or not.
Until now most people have brushed off these warnings from scientific circles as another form of doom and gloom or apocalyptic exaggeration. But the scientists are beginning to catch increased press coverage as new estimations unfold. The most recent odds place the probability of a 500 meter in diameter or greater asteroid striking earth in the near future at 1 in 300. That, obviously, is considerably lower than the 1 in 10,000's scenario put forth as recently as last year.
Scientists say that if a 500 meter asteroid were to strike Berlin, as an example, most of Europe would be wiped out. The impact would cause devastation surpassing that of all wars throughout history combined. There are both Old and New Testament Bible prophecies depicting an asteroid type object striking the earth and destroying cities in the last days and being one of the events that will usher in the establishment of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Also present in these prophesies is the striking of the ocean that would cause the ocean to toss and roar with ferocity, destroying many ships and poisoning the waters. True believers in Jesus Christ know that such warnings are not merely science fiction tales. They know that these are markers on the way to the coming of their LORD, not a time of panic or speculation without understanding. There is no indication in the Bible that man will stop any asteroid strikes or be able to foretell such a strike. This is represented in the secular world by the statements of scientists who say that we probably would have little if any warning and that presently we are helpless to stop it. The day is coming soon when man will fully understand the power of Almighty God and for many that day will be too late.
