SHARON REVERSES 2ND POLICY, ARAFAT FREE TO ROAM THE TERRITORIES

By Randy Loudenslager

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has reversed a second policy in as many days. Yassar Arafat, who until now was confined to the West Bank city of Ramallah, has met Israel's condition of arresting the murderers of tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi according to Sharon. The Prime Minister, citing the need for Israel to keep her promises, has released Arafat from confinement and is permitting him to travel in the West Bank and the Gaza strip. Arafat must still seek permission to travel out of the country.

The Palestinian response is one of anger. The Palestinians argue that it is outrageous that they have complied with Israel's condition and yet Israel is still carrying out air strikes and military incursions into Palestinian territories. The far right parties of Israel's Knesset are outraged and having announced their withdrawal from Sharon's government are making it clear that only the crushing of the Palestinian terror infrastructure, including Arafat's government, is the only solution to bring about a ceasefire. Even Sharon's own Likud party members are left scratching their heads as to what their leader is doing by making such a hard left in his policy making.

Speculation abounds from all points in the political spectrum. Some see Sharon's moves as an attempt at political self-preservation, others see it as a daring and/or desperate last grasp at a ceasefire. But probably the most poignant statement came from National Union Cabinet Minister Benny Elon when he said, "it [government] is slipping down the diplomatic slope and is ready to endanger the future of Israel for quiet . . . but it will be a fake quiet."

Perhaps the cabinet minister doesn't understand how prophetic his words are or maybe he has eyes to see what the old testament prophets of long ago foretold of the last days. God warned us through Daniel that a covenant will be made with the beast, but the beast will turn on Israel halfway through. God told us through Isaiah that Israel will make a covenant with death but it will be in vain. And the LORD warned through Ezekiel that when Israel is living securely in the land then she will be attacked and plundered. The LORD Jesus himself said that Israel will be surrounded by armies and that will be the time of her desolation, her punishment for rebelling against God's covenant.
