SHARON REVERSES POLICY, NATIONAL UNION-YISRAEL BITEINU ABANDONS GOV'T

By Randy Loudenslager

The worst death toll for a single day since the beginning of the Intifada 17 months ago occurred Saturday with 39 Palestinians and 6 Israelis dead. Sunday extended the carnage when terrorists killed 13 Israelis and wounded more than 100. Israel destroyed Yassar Arafat's headquarters in Gaza with coordinated missile attacks by IDF helicopters. In the Tul Karm refugee camp Israeli Defense Forces continued to meet success with the surrender of over 600 armed Palestinians and the discovery of a Kassam rocket factory and the capture of ten rockets. Several attempts by terrorists to carry out missions were also successfully thwarted by IDF and police personnel. It would appear that increased military response and incursions are beginning to affect the Palestinian resistance.

What has shocked the Israeli right and caused the National Union-Yisrael Biteinu faction to quit the three party coalition government of Ariel Sharon is his sudden change in a crucial policy. Sharon has reversed one of his major campaign promises. He announced yesterday that Israel will 'negotiate under fire' with the Palestinians, a direct turn-about of his policy requiring a 7 day quiet period from any violence before peace negotiations could continue.

The right-wing parties expressed alarm that Sharon had caved in to American and European pressure. Colin Powell specifically has called for an Israeli halt to hostilities and withdrawal from Palestinian areas. The EU meanwhile has positioned itself as the main champion of the Saudi Arabian initiative which calls for a complete Israeli withdrawal to her pre-1967 war borders in exchange for complete normalization with Arab countries. The U.S. and the EU have also reaffirmed their support for the land for peace initiatives agreed to by Israel and the Palestinians during the 1993 Oslo meetings.

With the right-wing support of Sharon's government self amputating, Sharon is left in a weakened state. Unless he can rebuild his coalition the left will have a better position within the cabinet to influence Sharon and further their own rush to give away Israel's land for peace with the Palestinians.

Israel is blind and groping around in the dark, she is fearful of what she cannot see and although supported by God and in the position to completely overwhelm the Palestinians economically and militarily she compromises her every move. When the blind lead the blind both fall into the pit. Things appear to be the same every day but when viewed from a biblical perspective it is obvious that things are disintegrating for Israel very rapidly. Enveloped in God's loving care how can she go wrong and yet wrong is all she seems to know. God calls to her, come back even now! Sadly, the Bible tells us she must endure her punishment for the adultery she is committing with the nations.

We know from scripture that Israel's leaders will lead the rebellion against the covenant and that Israel will be blinded and God will answer their prayers with silence. We know that when she is rebellious she calls down upon herself the curses found in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. Read these verses and ponder what is in store for Israel, and then pray for the Jews.
