Arafat's Box Enlarged, Slightly
By Randy Loudenslager
Speculation was rampant last Friday when Egyptian President Mubarak offered to extend peace relations to Israel and help communicate with the Palestinians about de-escalating the recent upsurge in violence. In exchange Israel would allow Arafat to leave his confinement and attend the Arab League summit planned for next month in Beirut.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, along with his security cabinet, decided yesterday that Arafat will not be allowed to leave Ramallah, but in exchange for his announcement that the assassins of tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi were arrested, Israeli tanks encompassing his compound will be pulled back from their close proximity to his offices, thereby allowing Arafat room to move about the city.
The Palestinians are upset with the Israeli decisions. They had pinned their hopes on the yet to be verified arrests to release Arafat from confinement and attend the summit. Arafat had reportedly been seeking assurances from America that Israel would allow him back into the country after he departed.
This easing of Arafat's confinement is temporary. Sharon, weary of Arafat's lies, has expressed skepticism about the arrests which still are unverified. Israel wants the murderers handed over but the Palestinians refuse and in light of recent Palestinian jail breaks and releases of terrorists it is unlikely that the Palestinians will hold the perpetrators for long.
Arafat knows that his time is up. Israel has effectively isolated him, not only from the world but from his own people. Israel has declared that they will no longer deal with Arafat and have backed this up with his confinement. Arafat's authority is greatly diminished and the Israeli government is meeting with other representatives of the Palestinians. This leaves the Palestinians no choice in the big picture but to advance other champions of their cause. The Palestinians will no doubt have a representative in Beirut for the summit, but on whose behalf will he be speaking, Arafat or the Palestinians?
The Israelis are ready to rebel against God's covenant and give some of their inheritance away to those who want to destroy her. Arafat can not see this but Satan does. Arafat's successor will be shrewd enough to not only talk peace like Arafat but act peacefully as well. Israel will give the shirt off her back to deal with a person like this. She will not understand that the hour of her punishment is at hand until after she breaks the covenant and is lulled into a false sense of security.
