Israeli Voices Grow Louder For War
By Randy Loudenslager
What was wide spread support among Israelis for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government is becoming less certain as the people begin to seriously question the government's efforts against Palestinian terror attacks. Fifteen Israelis, including two teenagers have been murdered by terrorists in the last two weeks. From newspaper headlines to talk on the street, it is becoming clear that people are afraid and want definitive military action against the Palestinians. Hawks in the military and government are calling for a re-occupation of all Palestinian autonomous areas.
Sharon's back is against the wall. Washington wants him to hold off any war with the Palestinians until Iraq's government is replaced. But America's war on terror agenda doesn't make the Israeli / Palestinian quagmire a priority. President Bush is making it clear that there should be no aggression against Israel, but America is going to dictate the order of battle against terror and Israel is not at the top of the list. Sharon's government isn't expected to last long if decisive action isn't forth coming soon. Sharon's handling of the Palestinian attacks appears to many Israeli's as indecisive and stagnant. Their fear is beginning to drive the population to seek other saviors in their government.
Sharon has warned Arafat that they will consider attacking him personally if evidence surfaces tying him with any recent acts of terror. This is a shift from present Israeli policy of not directly harming Arafat and goes against Sharon's assurances to President Bush that this policy will be maintained.
Arafat is enjoying a respite from overthrow, thanks to the U.S., but is using this degree of immunity from Israeli attack to escalate the Intifada. Israel is growing increasingly impatient with Arafat. Whether Sharon's government or another carries this conflict to solution, we will see fear drive Israel. What a man fears will master him and this situation is no exception. Peace, brought about through war or not, will only be fleeting for Israel. The Bible shows Israel's leaders will be responsible for making pacts with her enemies, something God has repeatedly warned her not to do in the scriptures.
