NICE IS NOT A FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT!

By Randy Loudenslager

Where does it say in the Bible that 'nice' is a fruit of the Holy Spirit?

The answer will surely irritate many of you reading this. Nowhere can it be found as a fruit of the Holy Spirit or as a desirable quality in a Christian! For those who are closest to me you know how I like to mention that the American church is so caught up in the 'nice cult' that it helped elect that 'nice' man Bill Clinton, not once but twice, to the White House!

The 'nice cult' dictates our Christian social customs. If someone pronounces that a person is nice then it is generally assumed that person is a Christian regardless of doctrinal position and can be trusted.

Someone will inevitably say that Jesus Christ was a nice man. If you believe this then you may be surprised that Jesus openly questioned his disciple's mental capacity by asking them if they were so "dull" as to not comprehend what he was saying! That's not nice. Read the gospels and look for examples of Jesus being 'nice.' You will come away seeing that the world did not perceive him as being a 'nice' guy.

If Jesus walked among us in person right now he would be automatically rejected by the 'nice cult' as being divisive, critical, arrogant, holier than though, condemning, abrasive, too intense and just down right intolerant!

Jesus wanted us to love each other. Our love can only be proven by our actions not by our words alone. It is found in joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These are actions that stem from obedience to the Word of God and are manifested as fruit of the Holy Spirit. Scripture says that if the truth is in us then we will walk as Jesus walked, humble, repentant and thankful. We will never depart from the truth nor will we withhold it from others even if appears to hurt them at first. In the Spirit we would discern that the long-term effects of the truth could be the very thing that will see a person into the LORD's kingdom. That is love!

Nice is a false spiritual fruit. It requires nothing from us but to be actors. As pretenders we feign kindness and gentleness with soothing words meant to tickle the itching ears of those who we are trying to impress with our piety. Can anyone say, "Sunday Christian?"

The very irony of the end-times is that many practitioners of 'nice' will never experience the persecution of the church because they will blend into the world so well with their 'I won't judge you if you won't judge me' mentality. You see, that is the danger of 'nice.' A somewhat recent survey has shown us that the most quoted scripture in the Bible was John 3:16. Unfortunately this verse has been supplanted with Matthew 7:1, which reads, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

God is sending forth his prophets. These are NOT nice people. They won't tell you what you want to hear. Although they won't judge you their words will! If your conscience isn't clear then they will be speaking conviction to your heart. If you are humble then their words will be met by you with rejoicing! The truth from the mouths of God's prophets more often than not leads to their suffering, torment and even death. But beware Mr./Mrs. Nice, you will not stop them or those who obey their words because they know that their reward is coming in the resurrection!

Check the motives of your heart. If you seek acceptance from other people then you are a self-seeker and are not worthy of the kingdom to come, no matter how saved YOU think you are! Seek God's acceptance alone, even at the cost of favor among men, without it you will not enter the gates of eternal life!

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
